I’ve read that people are annoyed with the time it takes Trico to move or behave as expected, but color me charmed all the same. Adding scale is the fact that the partner in question is a giant creature that helps solves the puzzles. The Last Guardian appears spiritually balanced, at least in these opening hours, between Ico and Shadow of the Colossus (hereafter referred to as Colossus because I’m lazy) in that I’m navigating narrow internal spaces with a partner to solve puzzles. Instead it’s some immediate thoughts and reactions to the first two hours of gameplay. The Last Guardian was nominated for and received several end-year accolades. In late November/early December 2016 there could only be one winner: Final Fantasy XV, developed by the geniuses behind Crisis Core and Type-0, or The Last Guardian, developed by the masterful storytellers behind ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.īoth titles were finally releasing after protracted (which is the kindest description) development cycles, and both were arriving after eleventh hour delays.įor everyone’s sake, I’ll skip my reaction to the fifteenth Final Fantasy but as winter gave way to Spring and to a truly remarkable game lineup (Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Mass Effect Andromeda) the Last Guardian slipped further and further into the past until now, in August 2017, the Last Guardian has come home. Several sites noted the game's commercial performance was disappointing, though the game eventually managed to sell between 1 to 2 million copies by June 2019. Trico's artificial intelligence and the gameplay surrounding it were met with polarized reactions, with critics split on its execution. It received generally positive reviews upon its eventual release in December 2016 critics praised its art direction, storytelling and emotional depth, as well as Trico's design and depiction, though also cited performance issues.
Since its announcement and numerous delays, The Last Guardian was highly anticipated. Sony moved the game's development unto the then-unannounced PlayStation 4 in 2012, and eventually re-introduced the title at E3 2015 for a 2016 release. Ueda and several members of Team Ico left Sony in 2011, effectively rendering the team defunct, and founded GenDesign, which continued to support development on the game's creative design and direction Sony Japan worked on the game's technical aspects and oversaw Ueda's team. The game's extended development and lack of news since its announcement led outlets and gaming press to call it a vapoware.
The Last Guardian suffered from a long and troubled development cycle it was originally announced in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, but Ueda and his team encountered difficulties due to the console's limitations the game's ambitious nature. Ueda desired to focus on a story between a human character and a creature, and the game's mechanics and design revolved around the concept of Trico. Gameplay is presented from a third-person perspective as players control the boy, and involve manipulating and directing Trico into solving puzzles and further exploring the game world.ĭevelopment on The Last Guardian dates back to 2007, and was originally developed by Team Ico with Fumito Ueda as the game's director. Throughout the game, the boy befriends Trico and the two explore the ruins of a castle nicknamed the Nest, while avoiding supernatural threats. The game's narrative focuses on the bond between a young nameless child (referred to as the Boy) and a magical half-bird, half-mammal beast called Trico. The game was originally developed by and was the final project of Team Ico prior to its dismantlement.
